Free Legal Assistance / Crime Victim Compensation

The
PATRIOT
Program
is a pro bono program that provides volunteer lawyers and special counsel from the Ohio Attorney General's Office to assist military personnel and their families with various legal issues.
Unlike every other state in the nation, war-torn families in Ohio have a place to turn for help covering expenses. Attorney General Jim Petro considers the deaths crimes and acts of terrorism.
This makes the families eligible to receive reimbursement from the state's Crime Victim Compensation Program for any funeral-related expenses not covered by military or insurance benefits. That can include lost wages, hotel stays and transportation costs to and from funerals.
Crime victims can apply for assistance by calling 800-582-2877 or logging on to
